1. Phone settings Firstly, let's go to your phone settings. A lot of phones these days have multiple lenses, and when you try and take a photo through a pair of binoculars or a scope the phone may automatically change the primary lens and you inevitably have this super frustrating experience where you've spent ages trying to line up the shot, only for the image to jump to another lens last minute. A simple way to fix this is to find a portrait mode or a pro mode on your phone (these should be easy to locate on both Android and IPhone). This will ensure that the lens remains the same. 2. Lining up the shot There are a couple of options to ensure you get a nicely centered shot every time. The most simple solution is to find a purpose built phone adapter that will ensure the lens and binoculars are lined up perfectly every time. These your phone directly to your binoculars and come in a range of models and prices. If you don't have an adapter, always start with your phone held away from the binoculars or scope. Look for the light coming through your binoculars at a distance and begin by slowly moving your phone closer and closer to the binoculars without losing that light. This will help you line the camera and the binoculars up every time. *roll those eyecups out! On most binoculars you will find adjustable eyecups on the portion of the binoculars that you look through. Extending these out will help find the correct distance between the phone and the binoculars. 3. Focusing I recommend finding the target in the binoculars first and making sure the subject you want to photograph is in focus before trying to line up your phone. Once that's done and you have lined up your phone, you can always adjust the binocular focus if the target moves. The autofocus on your phone should do the rest of the hard work. 4. Taking the shot. Firstly, find a handheld technique that works for you. I personally like holding the binoculars in my left hand and my phone in my right hand. Most cameras allow you to take a shot with the 'volume down' button on the side of the phone, and this is personally how I like to take mine. Don't lose hope if it takes a few attempts!!!
